You guys! I can totally relate to this. To be completely transparent with you, I’m there right now. I hate being in this place! Putting EVERYTHING else before God and making excuses. You do realize that this is spiritual warfare, right? Think about it, where were you before this dry season hit? You were on fire for the Lord, right? I know in my life once this dry season hits it’s only after I’ve been actively pursuing my relationship with Christ, and Satan knows it! And, he doesn’t like it!
So, how can we overcome Satan and give our hearts back to God? How do we do this when it seems that we have way too much going on that we can’t even find time to pray and read our Bible? Or, How do we do this when we don’t have the desire to pray or read our Bible? Gasp! Yes, It’s true, sometimes my motivation isn’t there and praying or reading the Bible seems like such a chore. Yes, a chore!! Then my guilt sets in, how can this be a chore? Praising and worshiping a God that shed His blood on the cross and died for us!! How dare I? But friends, we are human, let’s extend ourselves some grace.
When I’m in this season of life my love for God doesn’t change. My heart desires and longs for a relationship with Him. However, I’m just not pursuing him like I should be. For me, it’s never a thought of “oh, I don’t need Him in my life.” I understand that God is truth and love, He is the ONLY way!
Here are 5 different ways that will help you get out of this dry season. Keep in mind that sometimes you come out even stronger and more determined once you get past this obstacle.
Look around you and count your blessings. Seriously! Look around you and think about all the things God has placed in your life. I think when we are in this dry season of life we tend to focus on the negative and the things we don’t have. Let’s change our thinking. Each day, several times a day look around and be witness to all that He has given you.
When I really sit down and look around at all the things the Lord has blessed me with it brings me to tears. Maybe our home isn’t as big as we would like but it’s our home. Maybe our cars aren’t as new as we would like but they run well. Maybe I can’t stay home and homeschool my children because I have to work full time but they are in one of the top-ranked school districts in our area.
Pray and thank God for those blessings. Let it be known to Him that you are so grateful for everything that He is providing in your life. I get it, there are so many struggles in life that sometimes it’s hard to look past that. But, pray and give thanks to God for what you have. A good place to start is thanking Him for the Breath that you breathe, He gave you life. He created you for a purpose! You are His masterpiece!
Take your struggles and turn them into praises. Friends, I get it! I’m a busy working mom with three kids. Sometimes we just want to shut the bathroom door, hide out for an hour and eat Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and have a good cry. This is where you can find me sometimes when the weight of the world seems too much to bear.
I am dealing with a very strong-willed eight-year-old girl right now who makes me want to pull my hair out. It is a daily struggle, definitely one that needs constant prayer. I pray that God will help me be the mommy that He needs me to be to this little girl. I ask Him to help me connect with her heart and train her in the way she should go. Many times I feel as though I’m failing the little girl that God has trusted me with. Finances, I praise God for the food and clothes that He has provided for us, even though we have been foolish with our finances.
Take a good look at your priorities. Are you overextending yourself with meaningless obligations and it’s taking you away from God, your children, your marriage or your home? I think this particular dry season in life is a good time to figure out why you can’t devote time to your loved ones. When we overextend ourselves like this, it leaves no room for the people that really matter. By the end of the day, you have nothing else to give. Keep in mind, God did not create us for this purpose.
Let’s talk mom to mom. I get the busyness of life, I really do. We are a two-income household, which means that I work full-time. Part of this is because we chose to live in a really good location that has amazing schools and the other part is because we are foolish and not being good stewards of God’s money and have gotten ourselves into debt.
God has blessed me with a career that allows me to stay home and work. It is a 40 hour per week job so even though I’m home, I am working! It does allow for some flexibility though, like putting a meal in the crock-pot at 10 am, starting a load of laundry or running to the school to drop off something that one of the kids forgot. I would say 70% of my time is spent on paperwork and the other 30% is visiting families homes to help their children who have disabilities. I also teach English to children in China through VIPKID. It’s amazing to be able to connect with children from across the world and teach them my language.
I love what I do! In addition, I have started Our Missional Family. I wanted a place for us busy moms to come and be real with each other about our spiritual life and our struggles. Too often, I feel that I am so unequipped to be raising Godly children but I desire it and understand that it is the only way. I want us moms to create Haven’s and ministry’s in our homes. Home is where it begins!
We need to build each other up so we can accomplish such mighty tasks. Pray and ask God to help lead your direction in life. Let Him know that you are ready to follow the path that He has set for you and stop following the path that you are setting for yourself. Do a brain dump of all your obligations and see if you can get rid of 2-3 things that will free up your time with your family.
Alone time with Him. This is where I tend to make excuses for not having enough time in the day to sit down and read my Bible. I am an early riser, it just comes naturally for me. I get so much more done in the 2-3 hours before the rest of the house wakes. I NEED that time for me and it sets the direction for my day. Plus, since I teach ESL for VIPKid when it’s evening in China it’s morning here in the States. I start teaching by 5 am.
If you are not a morning person, I would strongly encourage it! If you are in a season of life where you have little ones and sleep when you can, I get it! Don’t beat yourself up, just find a time of day that works best for you. If you can’t find the time to physically sit down to read the Bible, listen to it on your phone. Turn it up so everyone can hear it. Make this a daily thing so your children can hear God’s word instead of the junk that’s on TV. Turn off the TV and crank your favorite worship music and dance with your kids. Here is a list of 10 of my favorite worship songs.
I would encourage you to find a quiet time during the day where it’s just you and the Lord. Take 15-30 minutes and just be still with Him, pray to Him and ask Him to lead the way. Let Him know that you cannot do this on your own and you want Him to be in charge of it ALL (He is anyway, we just need to surrender).
Sometimes, my alone time with Him is putting on headphones and listening to some of my favorite worship songs, I can feel His presence during these times. Sometimes I break down, It’s almost as though I can picture a life that the Lord has created for me but I am so far from actually getting there. I can feel the deep connection with Him in certain moments but get sad because I don’t have that all of the time because of my selfish nature. Sometimes my best writing comes when I’m listening to worship music. I think about my brokenness and it makes me realize how many others are struggling with the same things and it makes me want to reach out to other moms.
Come follow me on this amazing journey!
